Any time of year: both parks open every day, rain included. Choose by what matters most to you. The warmest months run from December to March, and the busiest periods are the Argentine summer holidays from December to February, long weekends and the July holidays. The cooler months run from April to August. The volume of water does not follow a fixed calendar: it rises after heavy rain over the river's basin, and recent peaks came in June and in October. Whatever the month, go at opening time.
In short
- Open every day of the year: there is no closed season
- Warmest: December to March. Coolest: April to August
- Busiest: December to February, long weekends and the July holidays
- Most water: after heavy rain upstream, not in a fixed month
The weather through the year
The Argentine national parks administration describes the climate as humid subtropical, with temperatures between twelve and thirty-two degrees Celsius. The warmest months run from December to March and the coolest from April to August.
- Warm months: the Brazilian park recommends light clothes, comfortable shoes and sun protection; the spray from the falls cools the walkways
- Cool months: closed, comfortable shoes, trousers and long sleeves, and a jacket on cold mornings
- Rain: both parks open every day of the year, also when it rains, and you get wet on the walkways anyway
What else to pack for the trails is in what you can bring to the parks.
How much water, and when
The historical average is about one and a half million litres per second. The volume depends on the rain over the Iguazú basin, so it rises after heavy rain upstream rather than in a fixed month: the Brazilian park recorded almost four times the average at the end of June 2026, and more than seven million litres per second in October 2025. With more water the falls are stronger and the spray is thicker.
When the parks are busiest
- The Argentine summer holidays, from December to February, bring the most visitors
- Long weekends and the July winter holidays are also busy
- In the year-end holidays the Brazilian park has opened earlier to meet the demand
- The Brazilian park's advice for any busy day: go at opening time or after one in the afternoon
Opening and closing times are in the opening hours guide, and how far ahead each side goes on sale is in when to book.

Questions
What is the best month to visit Iguazu Falls?
There is no single best month. December to March is the warmest and, from December to February, the busiest. April to August is cooler, with July holidays and long weekends as the busy exceptions. The amount of water depends on recent rain, not on the month.
When is there the most water?
After heavy rain over the Iguazú basin. The historical average is about one and a half million litres per second, and recent peaks came in late June 2026 and in October 2025.
Is it worth visiting in winter?
Yes. The parks work normally in every season. Bring closed shoes, trousers, long sleeves and a jacket for cold mornings, and avoid the July holidays if you prefer fewer people.
Do the parks close when it rains?
No. Both open every day of the year, rain included. Very high water can close the Devil's Throat walkways for a day or two as a precaution.
